an authentic 8-generation Penang establishment. We will keep to our root faithfully.
Campbell Street, George Town
I was born in India. My father brough me here when I was about 5 years old. We came to join the elders of the family who were already running the Hameediyah restaurant in Penang since 1907. I came by the Rajula ship, the journey from India took 7-8 days. The first impression of Penang, I felt home instantly because our community was here. The people, food and language were familiar.
Hameediyah is located on Campbell Street, the “high street” of Penang in the 1960s. People flocked here to shop for cloths, jewelries, clocks and watches etc. As a kid, I enjoyed sitting by the roadside people-watching. I was excited seeing people of different skin colours and spoke in different languages here. This was the main difference from where I came from. Penang is multicultural. I liked my new home.
I started to help my father in the shop after Form 5. Of course growing up in the shop, I had been helping in small errands since young age. At that time, everyone (bosses and workers) lived in the shop. When I started to manage the restaurant, I liked to mingle around with the customers, getting to know them. I think that’s why we have a lot of returning customers regardless of race and religion, there is a homely feeling here.
And the important thing is the food quality. That keeps people coming back. Our signature dishes are Chicken Briyani, Beef Rendang, Chicken Kapitan and Mutton Murtabak. We follow the original recipes strictly and every day we will taste the food to ensure the standard before we open for business. I’m proud to say that Hameediyah is an authentic 8-generation Penang establishment. We will keep to our root faithfully.
